Sprocket size - Change?

Post by kenkah » Tue Mar 06, 2012 10:01 am

I'm currently looking to purchase the sprockets and chain set listed on the ebay link earlier in this post but I do have a question.

I looked up the sprocket and chain size in the bill silvers book and it is says the rear sprocket is supposed to have 29 teeth for the rear dive and 16 teeth for the front drive and the chain is supposed to have 96 Links. The ones listed in the ebay listing are 31 teeth for the rear, 15 teeth for the front and 100 link chain.

I also double checked what is physically on my bike and counted 29 teeth on the rear sprocket, plus it has the number 29 stamped in it. I'm just wondering can this be changed over to the 31 teeth and would that be the reason for the longer chain?

29/16 is 1.82:1 where 31/15 is 2.067:1. The bike will be revving higher with that combo. You could try it and see if it works for you and if not, replace the front with a 16 (1.9375) or 17 (1.8235) to gear it up a little.

That chain is probably a standard length boxed chain and will need to be shortened by a couple of links in all probability. They come 100, 120 links and so on.

Thanks for the info that was a big help. I think I'm gonna try it out if I can get them for the right price.

sproket Kit

Post by kenkah » Fri Mar 23, 2012 8:56 pm

I got the kit on and it all worked out great. Have a new brake issue though. Had the brakes relined and they are too big for the drum, hoping the shop is open tomorrow so I can get this fixed. anyone know the exact thickness of the brake lining? or the amount of spacing there should be between the drum and brake.

Got my new tires in too, went with kendas, i just have to put the portawalls on and they'll be good.
