I agree. I have a 1960 C77-A with metal shock covers and have some early NOS covers in metal that had an early C72 part number. I'm also with you that ALL genuine white shock covers were metal. I have a couple of those.

What is the difference between a CA77 and a CA78
Shock Covers
G and Elephant,
Am I correct that both of you agree that the shock covers are either early/late or color question and not a CA77/78 difference?

I have vin# CA 78 1004232. I do not know the year
Re: Shock Covers
I believe that early shock covers for very early C(A)72 and C(A)77 were metal. I think that this was a hangover from C71 and C76.conbs wrote:G and Elephant,

I also believe that all genuine white Dream rear shock covers were metal, including CB160 and CB72......
Not a difference between CA77 and CA78 but the white rule applies to CA78.......

Parts
If you are buying parts for the engine...use the engine number
If you are buying parts for the rest of the bike...use the frame number.
That is how they are listed in the parts manuals. If you are trying to buy parts without having access to a parts book, you will have a very hard time figuring things out. Honda made running changes during production and there is no "model year" for these bikes. The only thing you have to go on is the frame/engine numbers.
