I bought a set of tapered bearings from All Balls, 22-1011 for my '65 Dream to replace notched out races, after stripping the shaft and frame, it looks like my upper steering shaft id is 24mm, not the 26mm id that the kit comes with. The frame race, at 48.5mm od is correct. Lower seems to match fine, both inner and outer. Anyone come across this before? 24 x 48.5 taper bearing does not seem to be a standard size.

OK; I'm going to have to retract my earlier post. did some more measuring and "liv the dream" is correct. 22-1011 will not fit the dream frame. my previous measurements were taken on just both outers and the lower inner. any body here that went out and purchased 22-1011 for their dream on my advice please pm me and I will gladly buy that kit from you as it fits a lot of my other bikes.
Thanks
Randy

Any machinists out there know if it is possible to shim the upper section of the stem to 26mm from 24mm? The lower race is 30mm so it would fit over a 26mm shim.

Oh and Randy, you're a stand up guy for offering to buy out any "mistakes", but I'm not giving up just yet on the tapered set up. tomorrow I'll stop at my local bearing depot to see if there is any alternative in a 24 x 48.5 size.

I just came across a website "Pyramid Parts", UK based I believe, who sell a 24mm x 48.5mm x 17mm tapered bearing. Ordered 2 sets, will update this thread when rec'd. Price about $16.oo each.

Sorry about never updating, but here goes: Rec'd berings from UK, of course not sizes as advertised. Contacted vendor, they promised to make good but never heard from again. Gave up after a couple of tries. So- final assembly used one tapered set and one cup and ball set.
Bike still on the bench. Weather turned nice, haven't spent any time in garage for awhle. Time to start tossing wrenches again in the Northeast US.
