pknopp, yes, holding the top of the carb and twisting moves the slide up and down. I could also hear that action before I took it apart. The spring is pulling the cable back as well.
I took the carb off and pulled it apart and it looks pretty darn clean to me? Nothing floating in the fuel. A slight bit of varnishing happening in the bottom of the float bowl, but it doesn't look dirty to me? (but I can honestly say I haven't seen the inside of too many carbs)
Pics below. The float seems to be made of copper? so it appears rusty in the photo but it's not.
I've heard that an ultra sonic clean is the right way to clean a carb, but I've also heard Simple Green does a good job too? The local auto supply here sells some carb cleaner that I might try first?
A flashlight from the bottom shows light through the main jet and the jet beside the main one (don't know what it's called) is showing some light too, but it appears to be a smaller hole by design? Either way it's not completely blocked.
So, I'll clean the carb, put a new throttle cable on anyway and then try to start it again.
