Kevin, Here's a theory for you. It assumes this is an original frame & engine combination on a '62 bike.
If there had been a "2" stuck at the beginning of the frame number (80194), you would seem to have matching numbers that were within 200 units. BUT, the frame number should only be 5 digits. That might support the idea that the person striking the frame number just went to 5 digits and then stopped - leaving off the "2".
Second problem is the 2nd digit of the 6-digit engine number (280162) should be a "1" according to Honda literatur and not an "8". The person striking that engine number seems to have clearly screwed up no matter what frame it was put on. The engine numbers being jumbled could also explain why your numbers run outside the range of 852 bikes the Honda literature says it built in 1962.
A worker trying to make sense of and correctly strike numbers of a foreign language could have been too much of a challenge at that moment in time. Or, maybe just an honest mistake.
Just a theory for which the answer will apparently never be known. No matter what you have a very interesting bike there and another great Honda bike story to go with it.
Early CA77 - 1961
I had also posted this on the 305 Yahoo group and got a response from Bil Silver.

I'm not sure why there is no "2" in the frame number, however when the second number is a "6", "7" or "8" in Dream chassis/engine numbers, the model is generally a CS72-77 high-pipe Dream Sport model or "other" chassis configuration, like sheet metal handlebars, rear luggage rack/solo seat combo, etc.
My $.02 worth, anyway.

I was also curious about these. Those shock bolts could be exhaust hangers for a high pipe Dream. They could also just be for an aftermarket luggage rack. Not sure about the other piece in second pic.

Sports Type muffler
Kevin, My '64 parts manual shows the rear Sports muffler mount on a modified top shock bolt just like what you have. There was a front mount for the muffler that was in the same location as the other part pictured, but the configuration looks quite a bit different.
Re: Sports Type muffler
did the front mount look more like a strap that went over the frame and bolted to both sides?conbs wrote:Kevin, My '64 parts manual shows the rear Sports muffler mount on a modified top shock bolt just like what you have. Sports Type Muffler
Mine looks the same for a wet sump. For some reason I can't get an image to upload. It also shows application of the Sports Type mufflers for CS72/77 only.
