Should 55mph be the limit on my Dream?

Post by DrEvil » Sun Jul 22, 2007 12:43 am

I weigh about 210# and have not been able to get my bike to go above 50mph easily (long flat stretch will get me to 55). I took the carb out and tried adjusting it to see if it was the problem, but it does not appear to be a carb issue. I am going to do the obvious and check the valves and timing (although the previous owner just did this and I just bought it), but was wondering if I am expecting too much form the 305cc motor. Am I?

hmmm...i've had my ca77 over 80 MPH ( it took a while to get there)....but that is too hard on it. it has 10378 miles and never been rebuilt. i have owned it for 34 years

50-55 seams about right...and is fairly easy to get to. it may not hold that on hills ,but will recover speed to 55 fast on the flat. i weight 214 lbs

i think you may need some adjustments

Thanks, I forgot to mention that it starts and idles and runs fine around town, but it will not go above 55. I'll check the adjustments.

i believe if you look around here , you will see some tune up info...and especially how to time it

what kind of condition is the motor? have you done a compression check?

if the motor isn't giving power you need, maybe the ignition isn't advancing....check for that too

I can get mine up to 65+ on the flats, but I am alittle lighter than you.You could try moving the clip down one notch on the main needle to try and get alittle more speed, but you may run too rich.I did some experimenting with this and bigger jets.I was able to get some extra speed, but fouling plugs at top end.I am just running my original main needle and jet with a 40 idle jet from a Keyster kit.Fast enough for me.Joe

I adjusted the needle after making sure the rest of the carb was good. Up or down didnt make an improvement so I left it in the middle, where it originally was. I have the manual for checking advance, timing, valves, etc. Now all I need is time...

Thanks for giving me info on how fast these are supposed to go, that answers the question of "am I chasing my tail?"

Mine will do about 65-70 according to my GPS. I'm also right around 210 lbs. I rode my Dream 1250 miles around Lake Superior last summer and there was some big hills, slow going up them but we made it. My engine had new rings and gaskets last winter and I run a less restrictive exhaust and air filter than stock.
