CA77 Powdercoating

Post by mcinturff » Fri Feb 22, 2008 7:43 pm

Anyone have pics of their bike powdercoated? I have mine sugar blasted. Should I polish the metal out smooth as possible before coating or will it matter as far as nice-ness of finish?

I powder coated everything on my 65 305 and yes the metal prep needs to be perfect. I learned a few things on this one.

1. The frame, especially the back fender has weld marks. These show up when you powder coat. You cannot bondo and have PC stick to it. I used a metal filler called All Metal, but it just didn't turn out like if you did a good old fashion block and wet sand.

2. Also, be carefull of the type of PC. I learned that mine did not have a high UV / chemical resistance. I went ahead and clearcoated anyway.

If I had to do it again, I would paint the bike and PC only the small pieces.

Look on th restoration page under "65 CA77 Texas Rebuild."

I would powder coat my rims again. I really liked how it turned out.

I also live in Texas. Lewisville to be specific, but I was actually born / raised in Tomball. Cherry St. to be specific......

Well talk about a reply 6 years in the making. I went to High School just down the road from where you grew up. Are you still in Lewisville? I'm up in Denton at UNT now.

haha nice old forum bump. Im in Saginaw not far from you. I had the bike blasted then powder coated it all. Used the jb weld trick to smooth out some bad spots. Not sure you have an oven you plan on using but what I did is the jb weld for large issues. Then first layer of black powder. sanded. next layer and so on. Depending on the part it got a decent amount of layers. Still in process of tossing it all back together.
