Amazing first kick story

Hello, New guy Bob here.
I purchased a 66 305 Dream this summer, not running, a really nice survivor bike.



It hadn't run for years........ the guy I bought it from bought it not running and he had owned it for 5 or 6 years. Anyway I hadn't touched it until last night when I pulled the carb, and cleaned the varnish out. This morning I picked up some new o rings for the carb to cylinder spacer and put the carb back on. I pulled the plugs, and poured some Mystery oil in for a while as I changed the oil. New oil in, Mystery oil out, new plugs in, a little 1000 grit on the points, and fill the carb with gas. I hooked up the battery, turned on the key, and was just going to push the starter thru............. not even a full kick............. It started! Just like that! I was stunned.......... and no one to tell!

I doesn't want to run all that well with the choke off. I can keep it running, but it leans way out on the pilot jet and dies. Probably still have some crap in the carb that plugged up the pilot.

Any suggestions on web sources for info, and maybe some copies of printed material, aside from what is on this site.......... which I haven't looked at yet?

I'm missing the tube that lives between the air filter and the carb. Does anyone have a part # for the right size "pod filter" to just stick on the end of the carb for now?

UP DATE.........................................
I scraped the big stuff out of the tank, rebuilt the petcock, and installed a fuel filter to clean things up a little. Got it running, and the clutch was stuck. Common problem I read, so time to clean the clutch. I notice the clutch cover is a virgin.......... no tool marks on the screws. They came out hard, but out they came just the same. Clutch working again, clean oil, Still starts first kick. No Smoke now.......................... Grab the clutch, stab it into gear and pull away. Clutch works perfectly........ first gear, big jump to second (I know you know that, but it's my first 305 Dream) Third......... FORTH!........ Oh No! Where's fifth?... Hee hee I may a be dumb nu-be .......... but not that dumb. The pipes are roaring in unison, wind makes my eyes water a little, and the speed is blinding! She's a beautiful purring machine, a scant 12 years younger than I am, that has never had a wrench on it!

Wait a minute.............. it's 25 degrees......... I can't feel my hands.......... turn around, run the gears again and back in the confines of my shop. Ahhhhhh................ sweet satisfaction.

which narrows the ratio gaps between 1, 2 & 3. Something to consider if you ever drop & split the motor.
