Chain Guard Question

Post by houseowax » Wed Dec 02, 2009 4:38 pm

When I got my bike the chain guard was in a box along with various other miscellany. I've gotten it almost all pieced together, but the chain guard is still in the box. Do I actually have to remove the rear shock to get the top half on or am I overlooking something? It seems like it should be easier.

Well, since no one answered I went ahead and took the rear shock off and got the chain guard in place. Problem solved...except now I'm at a loss as to how they are affixed to the bike. The parts list seems to indicate that 6X8 hex bolts through the threaded holes in the frame and into the holes in the chain guard should do it but somehow this doesn't seem right. It seems like the guard is just hanging on the bolts and it's rattling and loose. It seems as if a nut is needed, although I don't know how you'd get one in such a tight space anyhow.

I know this is rudimentary stuff but I'm out on my own here with no experience and only a small handful of common sense! If anyone can offer me some insight I'd really appreciate it.

Hi,

I'm sorry, totally overlooked your question,
No, it's not necessary, but yes it makes life a lot easier.

Next to that, make sure that both pieces fit together.

chain guard

The chainguard is bolted on with those small bolts and no nuts.

There is also also a long bolt and nut that joins the top and bottom together at the rear
of the chainguard.

Thanks, everyone. I'll have to have another look at it and make sure I have everything on right, although I can't imagine what i could have done wrong. It seems pretty self-explanatory. Anyhow, whatever I have going on is clearly not right- it's just too loose and rattly.

I used to see a CA77 parked on the streets a few neighborhoods over. Now I look for it and it's never there. I wish I had some sort of visual for little details like this- I'm doing exactly as the parts reference shows but it doesn't seem right.

I'll figure it out, though. Thanks again for your responses.
