That's a question for your local DMV.
I believe in some states you can actually use an old "retired" plate on an old vehicle if you go thru the proper steps.
In WV, you can get an "Antique" plate, but it is a new issue and has driving restrictions....ie daylight only, weekends, or to and from shows etc. and there is no vehicle inspection required, lasts longer, and cheaper.
You can also get a "Classic" plate with no restrictions, but costs more, doesn't last as long, and requires inspection.
Each state is different.

I have a Vintage plate on my '65 Dream and an orig. '67 plate on my Super Hawk. The restrictions will vary by state and your ins. will be different with each too.

I just purchased a "Vintage" plate for my '67 here in Florida. There are no restrictions and it costs the same as a current plate...it is an ugly blue color though :( It is good for only one year too, just like regular plate. They would not let me keep my "last registered" 1974 Michigan plate.
