New Front Guards (Fenders) for Dreams - interested?

Post by wombat200 » Mon Sep 06, 2010 10:45 pm

Hi All. I'm in the process of obtaining a new old stock front fender for one of my bikes. I have quite a few front fenders, all damaged, and they're a pain to get right.

Anyway, I think I might take a fiberglass mould off the NOS one, for replication. I'd use a couple of them myself & they're easier to fix/replace than the steel ones. They would have to re-use the original steel brace at the rear but that's usually OK, or at least, easy to straighten out.

Would anyone else be interested? I don't have costings, etc, and am not looking to sell lots of them , just keen to hear from those that think this is a good idea.

Regards,

Rob.

Good idea.
I would think you could sell several of them, depending on cost.
What about a fiberglass repair panel just for the rear flair only?

Brewsky, bonding steel to glass, especially in an exposed area like the front guard, would always look messy & be a little fragile. Incontrast, a solid 'glass guard would be very strong. It would also give the owner an opportunity to get the steel one repaierd (if possible) at their leisure.

Just my thoughts....

On my guards, the guard itself is usually out-of-shape, not just the flaired end piece.....

That sounds a pretty good idea. I am in the fortunate position of having two pretty nice front fenders for the pair of C72's I'm doing so I am not in need. Judging by the number of crumpled Dream fenders you see, you should find quite a market. Now if you could make fibreglass mufflers, you really would be on to something....... :-)

I'm intrigued. I've been thinking about trying to hammer out my dented flare myself, but it looks to be quite a challenge.
What about fiberglass inserts that could be bolted in under the flare via the mudflap holes (for instance) that would reinforce the steel fender flare? IS that an idea of any merit? I'm wary of getting mine fixed and the fender painted only to have the flare crunched again.

There's a bloke here in Victoria (Australia) who makes beautiful stainless replicas of the originals, good enough to make you cry. Bill silver buys them for his customers & I have a set here. There is no comparison, really.

Well, you 'could' reinforce it with glass, but the glass is flexible, so the fender would probably still bend - maybe not as much, but it would..........

If I do this, I'd be leaning towards having glass guards on all my 'riders' (I have 6 Dreams here), and saving steel ones for my two intended show bikes (A VERY early CA72 & a 1960 C76).
