Steering Friction Discs??

Post by Dr. Frankenstein » Thu Sep 09, 2010 8:33 pm

Hello All;

On a 1964 305 CA77, can anybody tell me how to stack the friction discs that attach to the steering dampener, and how it all goes together on the steering plate/bearings?

How many discs should I have, and how do they stack around the steering column; and are the notches on the discs supposed to lock into the little notch on the steering frame itself, or the 'spring' under the dampener? Anybody got a photo?

Thanks!

-John

This might help... ?

I haven't gotten to this part of the bike yet. Maybe others can fill in what isn't in the picture.

I appreciate it, but no, I have that diagram; what I need is a pic of the discs in place, with an explanation of How they fit together and on there...the 'manual' I have is for C77's, 72's...everything BUT my specific model, a CA77, and each assembly is different...

I'm thinking maybe they go down over the dampener 'spring'...but I'll futz with ti 'till I get it right, I guess...

Here's the order from the top down:
13, 19, 18, 17, 16, 14, 4, 14, 15.

19 fits into the notch in 16

18 fits in the recess of 13

My 18 and 19 are different than the fiche, with a tab on 18 fitting into a hole in 19, but works the same

4 and 15 are fixed so they don't rotate

14 are fibers, the rest are steel

I can dis-assemble mine and take photos if you need.

It's kind of like figuring out the puzzles at Cracker Barrel, only with grease all over your hands.

The next question is to grease or not to grease, I greased mine, some don't.

Are replacements available for those (#14) disks? Or is that even an issue? .. .I'm assuming they wear slowly and when they wear you just crank some more on the big knob.

I wouldn't worry about any wear unless they are to the point of coming in two.
