Dream Rims?
Dream Rims?I see the posting about the tires, but does anybody have a lead on affordable 36-spoke rims/wheels? What about size information/spoke angle? Is there a way to safely modify a modern 36-spoke rim to fit?
Is there a moped rim that would work, or...?? And again, what size should the rims be for a CA77, if the tires are 3.25x16? Thanks... John 1962 305 1964 305
Re: Dream Rims?Ebay is usually your best bet. You're hard pressed to find rims in good condition as most of them need refinishing of sorts. If you're not particular about getting actual dream rims and want to shop by tire size instead, I find this chart rather helpful: http://www.hagon-shocks.co.uk/WheelTab.htm Oh, and if you're not on a tight budget, http://www.buchananspokes.net can get you really nice rims. You probably need to determine what size tire you want, then pick the matching rim size from there. (See Cyclon's chart above) Measure the clearance all the way around, and remember the tire will go up and down in the fender. 66 dream, 78 cb750k, 02fz1, 09 wing
Measure the clearance you have in your rear fender. If the drive chain falls inside of the fender, deduct that distance from both sides. After your done, deduct 1" from the total measurement so you have 1/2" clearance on either side and there you go. You could make it a bit risky and shave down the clearance lower than 1/2" on either side, but you stand the chance of rubbing if the tire rolls a bit or you get a flat. Oh, and make sure your wheel is centered first. Most tire manufacturers have the cross section width listed in the specs. This is a general measurement when the tire is placed on a properly sized rim. That measurement may change if you go with a wider or narrower rim. There are some NOS rims and spokes still floating around if you're looking for a totally original look.. but IIRC the price for the set I found was about $400 (for both wheels).. I'm not going totally original so I passed on them.
Apex cycle sells some rims and spokes (often on eBay), but they're not as wide as the stock ones, the spokes are reportedly not exactly right... and there are quite a few people on here who won't buy anything from Apex. Somebody said they were able to get some rims and spokes from MikesXS.. so that's another possibility?
