Two 305 Dream questions...

Post by Sascha » Thu Dec 09, 2010 11:17 am

Hey Guys,

Im full of questions (as always) so I am going to toss two out there to get your opinions:

1. Compression testing - I believe I need a 12mm head on the compression tester, can I test compression without the bike running? Will it be an accurate reflection of compression?

2. Oil - what oil do you reccomend I use in the bike? I have to drain the oil in there now and clean it out, but thought I would ask what type of oil you reccomend - the bike is a 1966 Honda 305 dream.
Also, if anyone has a walk through of an oil change on a dream, it would be nice to have. ;)

Thanks!
Sashca

Hi,
1. Compression testing - I believe I need a 12mm head on the compression tester, can I test compression without the bike running? Will it be an accurate reflection of compression?
Depending on the year of build, but it looks like a 12 mm to me. Yes, (not running) but the starter motor should work. Screw the tester head in (and leaf the spark plug out of the other side), and hit the starter button a while (10 seconds or so) until the compression doesn't go any further. If the engine didn't run for a while, put a little oil in the spark plug hole, start it without the tester, then screw the tester in and test. The cylinders should have the same compression.
2. Oil - what oil do you recommend I use in the bike? I have to drain the oil in there now and clean it out, but thought I would ask what type of oil you recommend - the bike is a 1966 Honda 305 dream. Also, if anyone has a walk through of an oil change on a dream, it would be nice to have. ;)
There is so much info on oil on the forum, so I suggest use the search function, there is no best oil, and it depends on what you want.

What oil do you guys use?
If its good enough for you, its sure as hell good enough for a rookie like me!

Hi,

I use a synthetic oil, but you cannot use it without some preparation.

I am not sure what kind of preperation is required but I would rather just an oil that is going to be an easy/good oil to select for a Honda 305 dream.

Hi Sascha, I've been looking at your progress and your bike looks great. I've been wondering the same thing about the oil too so I'll be interested in seeing what some responses are. Have you done your initial break-in yet? I'm curiouse because I am wondering if there is some other type of oil that should be used just for the break in process (I'm in the middle of a restoration and engine rebuild too). Also I like to do compression checks when an engine is hot (just after a good ride) to have a better idea of what compressions are at operating temperatures.

Hey Jethro,

Thanks - I appreciate the comments, its been a long time coming to get it to where I want it.
Yeah, should be interesting to see what the 'pros' use.

Do you have a thread for your build?

Sascha
