Dream exhaust options.

Post by Jethro » Fri Apr 08, 2011 1:18 am

I am nearing the end of my CA77 restoration and am in need of some exhaust pipes. I have both headers but only a tail pipe for the left side. My question here is if anyone has had any experience with an affordable option for replacement of the tailpipes. I realize that NOS is ideal but as everyone here knows a good set is hard to come by and cost can run pretty steep. I have read that some CB77 owners have had success with Dunstalls from JCWhitney ($56 I think). My thoughts right now are that there just has to be something else out there for us! I just searched the dream section and couldn't find what I was looking for and I'm not about to go digging through 60 pages of topics. Any insight would be so greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Jethro

I got the "Apex" style for mine before I read any feedback from the company.
They are 31" long and 3" max diameter (at 27" from the inlet).
I had to tweak one to fit as the welded tabs are not adjustable, and the inlet end is not split for tightening with a clamp.
I do like the shape, however.
They are also available from several overseas vendors like this:

It looks to me like the Dunstall long megaphone style would fit, though I haven't seen them on a Dream myself.

I ordered a set of those too, from the vendor you linked to. My advice? Don't go with surface mail. It's cheap, but they take something like 12 weeks. By the time you get them, it's too late to leave feedback. I'm still waiting and it's been almost 8 weeks.

Brewsky, did you end up splitting them and using a clamp? Are they the right size for the original headers with the stock gasket? I notice that the originals don't have a clamp either.

I've had those J.C. Whitney Dunstalls before, on a BMW R-75. They were loud, and you had to repack them way too often.

Brew, no winkers? How come? US-import? A Canadian market requirement was 'turn signals', I believe.

Apologies for hijacking & straying off-topic, guys!

Here's a link to my install:

I got mine from Apex Cycle, a US vendor, but it still took a month or so from them.

If you do a search for them on this site you will find some pretty bad feedback in their customer service department.

If I had to do it over again, I would probably try the Dunstalls......I don't know..

Should clarify that they are not actually "Apex" brand, that is just the name they assumed since Apex seems to be the only US vendor.

Steve,
I have a US version Dream,.......HOWEVER.....I did, by a stroke of luck, end up with a set of Canadian bars with winker wiring holes, so when I find a set of OEM style winkers at a reasonable price, I will be in business!

I am actually in WV, USA,....but don't worry, a lot of people in the US think we are actually another country too!

When did you move south to WV, then?............................... Just kidding!

One of my many, and now more-frequent, momentary lapses; without looking at your profile pane I, for some, inexplicable reason, convinced myself that you were north of the border with Wilf & Paul, et al!

Nothing at all to do with CA77 mufflers........
