Newbie with 69 ca77 oil leak

Post by maybe368 » Tue Apr 12, 2011 9:44 pm

Hello everybody. Been a member here for a short while and have gained a ton of knowledge just perusing all the threads. I searched my problem with no real good results, probably user error. I just got my 69 Dream running today after 20 years. She started right up and now is in need of a little adjustment. The problem is a pretty good oil leak coming from just below the alternator. I ran out of light and did not have time to pull the right side cover for a better look. Any ideas what it might be? What I should look for? Any help is greatly appreciated...Mark

Mark,

Please edit your loaction into your profile! There are 5 seals behind that cover. Remove the cover, clean it out really well, fire it up and try to see which one is leaking!

That shows one of the seals, the one in the starter sprocket. There is also a crankshaft seal, trans seal, clutch push rod seal, and gear shift drum seal. Go to your profile page, and there will be a line for "location".

Thanks, I'll pull it off AGAIN tomorrow. Can these seals be replaced without disassembling the engine? I realize that some is required, but I am talking about dropping motor, splitting cases etc.? Thanks Mark

Yes, all of the seals can be replaced without droppping engine or splitting the cases. There is a guy on ebay that sells seal kits, might be a good idea to order one up, and change out all of those seals.
