New Dream owner....updated info and PICS!

Post by Kalumia01 » Tue Apr 19, 2011 2:52 pm

Hey guys,

I am a new member here looking at a dream....

I am looking at a 1966 dream 305 here locally as a project for restoration over this summer. It is all original and totally complete. No rust, tank is clean. Been in a barn for many years. Motor is not locked up, has good compression. Comes complete with key and clear title!! It is black in color with approximately 11k miles. No major body damage. It needs a throttle cable an is missing the RH baffle in the muffler. It has minimal rust, just some pitting and very light surface rust.

Is there anything I need to specifically look for on these particular bikes? Common issues, problems, etc?

I am mechanically inclined and have restored many other bikes in the past.

I can probably buy it for a "few hundred" dollars and feel this is a good value.

I would welcome any thoughts.

Hoping to go look at it tomorrow.

Thank you guys!

Mike

well there are many threads asking the same questions. "What do i look for in buying one of these Dreams." Id do a search along with your post. With out seeing the bike and only going on what you said, a few hundred as in about $300-500 would be a good deal if its not locked up and only needs a few things to get her running. It could prob be parted out for double or triple that, but would be nice to see someone get another dream back on the road.

Its a small bike but a beauty at the same time. Great to run around town on and the looks you get are priceless.

Welcome and good luck,
steve

You can’t go wrong at that price. Of course pictures mean allot. Judging that you are a mechanical person and know what rust pitting is, I'd say it sounds to be in great shape. Headlight alone is worth 100 bucks. contemplate that. Mine sat for 30 years on Dad's land out in the open air some times covered some times not. Had to disassemble the starter and starter solenoid and clean allot of the electrical components up. Once all was said and done, It runs I drive it. And didn't do much else yet but change out the oil and clean the carburetor and swap out a idle jet. Which it has a very weird oil filter system with no filter to buy when you change the oil. It is a very interesting bike to say the least. Buy Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Pirsig. Might make ya want to buy it even more after reading it. Then there is Elvis. Then there is the Soichiro Honda - Mr. Honda Story. LOL. Bike has a Wealth of history etc. Plenty of support around to get it fixed up as well. This forum is full of hours on hours of reading interesting articles etc. I say Get it, You just might be the next Life time owner of a real Dream machine. =-) Did I say I was a Dork? Yeah, I'm a silly man. Good Luck and be sure to Take Lots of Photos Like a Crazy Lunatic! We like that here.

YOur answer has already been covered. There really isn't anything else you need to know. With keys and title, not locked up and assuming all parts are there, there is no question. For a "few hundred" buy it. As noted, you can part it out for more than that. Tank (if as nice as you state) $200 + or -. Carb covers $100. $100 headlight (as noted). There is your money already.

Thanks for the welcome guys. I am planning to go see the bike in person tomorrow, hopefully it is in the condition the guy told me over the phone!

I will have some pictures of the bike hopefully tomorrow, so I will update you all with the condition tomorrow night.

I posted a picture of the bike from his Craigslist ad.....

It's hard to tell but it looks like the carb covers aren't there. Check for that. If you aren't sure what those are, do a search to get familiar. It's tough to tell in that pic but check the mufflers. Originals are good. Fairly pricey to replace if they are missing.

Looks like it's been stored inside a dry area. Carberator on it? Thouse tank badges alone are worth over 200 if their original and in good shape. Looks like the speedo is in good shape to. Could be a very good restore machine even if you do need muflers.
