Horn working, but one wire not connected. Is this normal?

Post by Cheburashka » Tue Sep 04, 2012 3:17 pm

I'm re-doing the wiring and adding directional signals to my '64. I've got all the stock electrical systems working, but there's an extra green wire that comes out of the horn button and has no place to connect. There's no bullet on the end. Oddly enough, the horn still works, and it appears to get its ground from the handlebars. Is this a ground for the horn, and is it redundant (i.e. to make sure the horn works if the handlebars aren't grounded) or do I have more troubleshooting to do?

Thanks

Does your headlight work? There is a color Dream wiring diagram at the beginning of the Electrical Forum.

Headlight is fine

The headlight works on high and low beam.

One problem is that this isn't an original switch. I took it off of another bike that had blinkers. It looks like the CA77 has four wires coming out of that switch--three for the headlight (green, red and blue) and one for the horn (black.) This one has an additional green wire coming out of the horn switch, and the three wires for the blinkers.

The headlight grounds at the bulb as do each of the winker bulbs per the wiring diagram.

Using a switch that is not from a Dream means you will have to make it up as you go.

I had a few wires not connected. Try and trace it back to see if its connected on the other end. The PO of my bike had replaced a few wires (using different colors), but didn't bother taking off the old ones. Made it real confusing!

Everything works.

I connected it to ground and everything seems to be working fine. All electrical systems are working and the engine is running (although loudly--see my other recent thread.)

Thanks
