Speedo cable routing???`

When I got my '65, the speedo cable had some of the sheathing missing from when it rubbed while riding between the fender and the chromed suspension member behind the fender. The clip was never in place. I'm wondering:

1) What's the correct routing?

and

2) Can I just fabricate a clip for it out of thick sheet metal? A picture of the correct part would be nice.
