1963 C72 and 1963 CA77 Compatibility
1963 C72 and 1963 CA77 CompatibilityHi everyone. As some of you are aware, I finished my 63 Dream (CA77) and I was fortunate enough to pick up a 63 (C72) yesterday.... for free. It is pretty much all there, except the very hard to find parts like chain case, and carb covers, and the left side cover. I have some old parts from my 63 (CA77) like rims, tires, exhaust pipes, and many other miscellaneous parts. My question is this, does ANYONE know if the parts are interchangeable? I know the internal engine parts pistons/rings and ports will be bigger on the 305, but as far as body parts.... are they interchangeable? being that BOTH are 1963's I "think" they would be, but I also found out the hard way that you shouldn't ASSUME anything with these bikes from my previous build. Any and or ALL comments and info are welcome.
Interchangability of partsThe best way to know if parts will interchange is to compare what is listed in the parts manuals for each of the two bikes. If it is the same part number, obviously they are correct for either bike.
Honda also made running changes to parts. Usually that will show up in the last 3 digits of the part number. Lower number = earlier part. Many of those will interchange without problem, and if it is a later part, you may have the advantage of an improvement. Once in a while that will affect another part that attaches to/goes in whatever part you are dealing with. An example is that left side cover. The early oil slinger cover has a much smaller "round" part that fits into the main cover. They have to match. As you found out from your 305, you can't assume anything. Rely on your parts manuals and you will almost always be pointed in the right direction. In general, the bikes are the same size and the "body" parts should fit. I don't have a 250, but I have looked at the parts manuals enough to know that the 250 has some oddities. There were 4 or 5 different tanks for some reason. You need to pay attention to those oddities. For the parts you have the best thing is to just try them. Go slowly and make sure nothing is forced. If they fit, you should be good to go. Parts you will buy on ebay, etc., you need to spend more time studying to make sure you know what you need and that you know that is what you are buying. Anyone who has spent any money on ebay buying Dream parts has experienced that loud "DOH!" coming from the garage. Shop wisely to limit the price tag of your mistakes and that's about the best you can do. Hope this helps you.
Thanks Conbs. I figured that I would need to dig out my manuals again before this rebuild. It should be an interesting project. Im hoping to keep the $ down on this rebuild with using some of my "saved" parts. But im sure I will still spend my fair share. Here are a couple of pictures for you to view. I was able to get a good picture of the VIN number on the engine, however, the frame was another matter entiredly. With it being black, dirty AND RUSTY... I will need to pull off some parts to get a good picture of the numbers. I will DEFINITELY post them when I get them. So in the meantime, heres a couple of pictures of the beast. Barn fresh, but free!!!

Do you know if the bike is original?
Handlebars seem to have early throttle and late brake/clutch mirror mounts as compared to CA77/78. The winkers look different from any I have seen, too. I can't see the handlebar mount, but it seems different as does the knob for the steering damper. Front of the seat looks like it is shaped differently from 305 and the tank looks to be 250-specific. All that said, if looks like many of the parts on the bike are the same as early 305. Thanks for sharing. That looks like a great project.
I was thinking the same thing, but I haven't had much time to do any research on the bike itself. Im sure its not original, because the side covers (insides) are red, while the under coating of the black looks to be white, yet, blue at the tips? as far as the handlebar clamps, they look a lot like my 63 305 Dream and the steering dampner is definitely different, however, when I searched online (very brieftly) I found another 250 with the same dampner knob. So, with that being said, I think that is original to the bike, and it has "locking clips" so the dampner doesn't come loose. The tank is 250 from what I have found (if anyone believes otherwise, please educate me). My hubby made a couple of comments about the levers and throttle, so Im sure its a mixture of years and models lol. I will need to really dig into it to find whats right and whats not. I have some old parts from my rebuild of my 305 that I think im going to use on this bike, so it will end up being a modge podge bike anyways. (a Honda Frankenstien if you will). :) should be very very interesting...... :)
????absolutely Jensen. I've been doing some digging on the internet, and I can't find them on a Dream anywhere. I've seen the square ones, but not these round ones. I haven't the foggiest idea where they came from. This bike has certainly sparked my curiousity. The handle bar clamp is actually different from my 63, 305 Dream. I thought it was the same but it's not. If you guys come up with something, please let me know.
