I have a 66 CA95 and a 67 CA77 both of which need extensive work. They are all original equipment down to the tires and tubs with around 5000 miles. they were last rode in 1991 when the eng started smoking and fouling plugs. Before that they had been stored since 1977.
What do i need to do to restore the eng to working condition? I have been told that the engine heads have to be remilled with new guides inorder to handle the unleaded gas. If so where can I get this done and where can i get the parts?
I also need some places to get items cromeed due to the poor storage area some of the chrome is in poor condition ie sides of tanks, pipes, mufflers etc. I will try to get pics and post them.
I was there when the bikes were uncrated I was 8 years old they belonged to my father and mother.
I am a school trained shade tree mech and have worked on many things through out my life from lawn mowers to army tanks, from building houses to working farms I am what you call the jack of all trades and the master on none.
CA77and CA95 restoration problemsMom And Dad's BikesWow! Quite a story on your bikes.
The best thing you can do is learn to use the search function on this side. Look above in middle of top row. It is not the greatest, but you can find lots of useful information. Try different combinations of words and you will probably want to use the "posts" icon in the lower left. Normally a lot of hits will come up. Reading those will give you info you didn't even know you needed. There have been posts on all of the questions you ask about. Best wishes on your projects. I look forward to reading about your progress. you should not have to pull heads and do any machine work. That is bullshit.
First thing to do is soak those cylinders down liberally with ATF and Acetone mixture. Soak them for a month, shoot a little in each plug hole every day. let it drain to the sump and drain the sump regularly. Flush that baby out. What likely has happened is the rings have stuck in their grooves causing the smoke. After a month of soaking, make sure hte sump is drained and fill with fresh oil. Also pull the valve inspection caps and squirt oil in on the cam etc. A lot of it. Then pull the plugs and kick the motor over a lot to get oil moving throug the passages. This assumes you have verified you have spark and have cleaned the carbies. Then try to start it. Let it warm up a bit, it may smoke a fair bit at first but let it warm up. Once warm, take it out and give her a good hard run. If that doesn't free the rings up and stop the smoking then I'd say worse case would be a hone and new rings. But i'd bet you'll be surprised that it will be just fine. As for the unleaded gas question. On old bikes that can be a concern, if you plan to ride them 10k miles a year. Honestly, I use a special fuel mix for my dream, as well as all my old brit bikes and my old MG TD. I buy non-ethanol fuel, add a lead substitute and octain booster, Stabil, and I also add a 100:1 2 stroke oil mix. The new 2 stroke oils don't smoke and the oil helps lubricate petcocks, carbs, valve stems and guides etc. The additional upside is the oil helps coat the inside of exhaust pipes to help prevent rusting. Not an oily mess like a 2 stroke bike since the ratio is less. I've been doing this for over 10 years now and have had zero problems with any of my bikes or cars.
