1964 ca77 rebuild kits for carb, petcock, tune-up?

Post by Mark13018 » Thu Feb 14, 2013 12:04 am

Hey guys, it's been awhile since I was on. I've been working on my 87 super magna, 95 magna deluxe and my 71 cl450 cafe racer... now is time to get ready to start on the ca77 and it has sat for over 40 years and the plan is to rebuild the carb and petcock with new parts and do a tune up maybe including spark plugs, condenser, points, etc... what do you guys recommend? Where do you get it from? Is ebay my nest bet? I'm sure you guys have bought these items before and can help me save time and maybe money. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Mark

You will need a petcock repair kit (or replacement petcock).

You probably will not need a carb "kit" unless you have damaged hardware parts. Just clean and re-use what you have, except probably the bowl gasket. Try local Honda dealer for that. Bring your old one with you. (It is the same as early CB750K SOHC4's)

I would check for spark before replacing electrical parts. Just clean and adjust and see what you have. (you have to drop the engine to replace the condenser unless you just install another in alternate location)

The one electrical part I would definitely replace is the rectifier, see here:

Rebuild kits

Mark, I have used several of the carb and petcock kits from RetroBikes in Port Angeles WA (NOT the guy in Florida). They work great and Kaylor is a great guy. Use the original brass.

If you do a search of this site, you can find some good info on the experiences people have had with rebuilding the petcock. Some people get frustrated and give up. I find there are a couple of tricks you can use to make the petcock work just like brand new. Use the cork seal and set the little spring piece with the 4 wings as described in other posts and it should work fine.

Brewsky is right, See what you have with your spark before you start replacing things. If you have spark, I would get it running and, as appropriate, take it for a spin to determine what your motor, tranny, etc are like.

Best wishes on your project.

Make sure you're getting original sealed Honda rubber for the petcock. I got an aftermarket rubber seal and it turned into jello when the gas hit it.
