Horn and mirror threading

Post by kms » Sun Apr 20, 2014 5:33 pm

Hello,

I'm trying to get my running CA77 street legal and have a few questions.

The horn clicks, instead of sounding. It looks like the relay triggers but that's about it. At some point, my CA77 was converted to 12v, so I think this may have something to do with it. Any tips? For now, I have a cheap 12v horn on its way here that I'll put in, but I'd like to get the original horn working.

I also have some issues with my mirrors: I have both mirror arms, but only one still has a mirror on it. I only need one to be street legal, but the threading where they attach to the handlebars has been wore out. Any tips on the threading? I'll work on sourcing a replacement mirror later.

Your CA77 should have been 12v originally.

Not sure on the horn. I have fixed a few horns but not a CA horn that I can remember. Usually it just needs an adjustment or the contacts cleaned inside.

The mirrors were originally 8mm. You could try re-threading them with a tap if you still have enough material in the hole. If not they could be drilled on tapped for 10mm mirrors but I don't think you can get 10mm mirrors in the original style. The other option might be to just replace the perches.

Yeah, the wiring diagrams I have say 12v, so I was wondering why the shop told me that.

I'll try cleaning up the horn.

I found 8mm matching mirrors online, I just don't have experience with rethreading. I'll look into new perches.

Thanks! I'll create a restoration thread and post some pictures soon.

KMS - You could easily heli-coil the 8mm threads. Kits are available at NAPA and other auto parts stores. Might be the same cost as new perches, but then you'll have the kit. Might also be a forum member nearby who would do it for you for cheap.

I totally spaced out about the helicoil idea. Excellent option.
