My Ca77 Rings don't have any marks to show which side is up.

Post by black55tbird » Thu May 29, 2014 8:48 pm

As the title to the post says, My Ca77 Rings don't have any marks to show which side is up for installation. The middle ring looks like it should be put on a certain way because it has a step down on the outer surface which makes it a little thinner at contact. Top ring is silver and the oil ring is obvious but none of the rings have any identifying marks to show which is the up position.

The pistons and rings are 3. over (Big Bore)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I've had to look closely to see the marks on some ring. If I remember correctly it was just a dot on the last ones I had. As far as the center ring goes, a rule of thumb applies, a step on the inside goes up, one on the outside goes down.

Your aftermarket overbore rings may not have markings. In that case I usually refer to a factory set or the originals that were in the engine to make sure of the orientation.

I have a second engine apart and the rings don't have a step in the middle ring and other wise they look like they could go on either up or down.

The step is on the outside of the ring. I am not sure what you mean by putting it up or down based on the step.

I guess I could pose the orientation question as such. Should the outside profile contact to the cylinder wall be at the top or the bottom of the ring as it is positioned on the piston?

Thanks again!

Don't know how I triple posted!!!

The step on the outside will go on the bottom.
