help with restoration

Post by pieeater » Sun Sep 28, 2014 6:07 am

hello
I am a new member to the site and have just bought a CA77 that's a bit of a wreck ( a lot of a wreck actually ) and I am going to fully restore it. I am going to need a lot of parts. Is there a good place in the uk I can get parts for the bike as the post from the us is too great. The engine is seized and its going to have to come out for surgery. I need
a petrol tank
a swinging arm ( unless I repair it )
a seat ( I might fit a single seat )
the battery and toolbox covers.
lower section chain guard
speedo cable
a set of rings and a gasket set ( at the very least )
and a key to fit a T7 364 switch.
Any help

Hi PieEater

Welcome to the Forum. I can probably help you out with some of those parts but we will been to work out what year the bike is. Th frame number is down on the left hand side by the stand pivot and the engine number is on the top of the crankcase.

Post some pictures and we can see what you have and haven't got :-)

hello G man
the ser no is ca78 1021350
the eng no is ca77e 1021354

Took the engine out today and took the head off, had to split the cam chain because the split link was at the bottom end. The left piston is solid. Left it soaking. Will have another go tomorrow.
Tried to add a photo as an attachment but it dosnt work for me.

Sounds like progress. To upload photos you need to resize them to make them less than 500k bytes, I think. Alternatively put them on flickr or photo bucket and link to them.

Patience is your friend with the seized piston. Just keep soaking, heating and whacking it with a piece of wood.

I should be able to find you a tank, side panels and swing arm. They are stored a couple of hours from home so be patient....

I recently un-seized my engine, didn't want to risk damaging the crank so didn't use the hammer or heat but pressed it out with the aid of 'Coca-Cola' there is a post on the forum somewhere if you do search.

hello
I have found a swinging arm on ebay but I still need a lot of other stuff.
Had another go.This left hand piston is solid. Going to make a pusher plate off the barrel bolts with a spring under the plate to load the piston while a heat it up and then I can leave it loaded up. If this don't work I might have to bite the bullet and drill it out.

1.Remove the cylinder head from the engine already out of bike.
2.Scrape outer edge of piston with exacto knife. This will help the oil to penetrate.
3.Finely sand exposed rusty cylinder walls.
4.Vacuum the crud out of the engine.
5.WD-40 (or favorite penetrating oil) both sides of piston.
6.Block up with combustion end up (if the rod end is up, there is a danger of melting the babbitt on the end of rod).
7.Pour one part ATF transmission oil, one part gas into cylinder (approx. 1/2 cup each).
8.Light the oil/gas in the cylinder.
9.Let the fire burn out.
10.Let it cool slowly overnight.
11.Lay engine on it's side. Hit the piston with a wooden block and maul.
12.If the piston does not move, go back to step 5 and repeat.
