CA77 Dream Side Cover Differences?

Post by Seadog » Fri Jan 16, 2015 7:34 pm

Do all years of the CA77 use the same sized right side covers for the coil/solenoid/rectifier compartment?

I ask because I bought a new reproduction rectifier from a great retailer, but when I installed it, the side cover hit the terminal boots and would not close. There was a ½ inch gap at the top between the cover and the frame. I did install the rectifier correctly (there's really only one way to do it). I even removed the coil and solenoid and tried again to be sure. My only other guess might be that the right side cover, which I purchased used - age unknown - might be the culprit.

Any ideas?

A picture would help tremendously. As far as I know they are the same size but earlier covers have a slot for the clutch cable.

Mike, I'd be happy to provide a photo of the side cover, but I've already packed the rectifier up for return, so I can't show you how it kept the cover from closing. The cover does not have a cable slot.

I used a RadioShack rectifier on my Dream. It's only about 2 inches square and can be attached to the original bracket. It's a 25 amp 50 volt no. 276-1185 only a few bucks and works well.

Thanks Mike and Brewsky, I had wanted to stay with a new, but improved version of the old rectifier, but I'll have to go with modern technology I guess. Still wondering about possible differences in side covers though.

If you could post a pic of the side cover maybe we could tell you what you have. I have a side cover in good shape. If you can't post a pic I could send you pics of mine and compare. PM me.
