no matter what secret sauce you use, the first thing is to just clean. really clean with hot water/dish soap/stiff brush. pretty simple. amazing how much dirt comes out of these things when you just go at it with some soap. once the rubber is clean. I just leave it alone, don't much care for the shiny look you get with most "protectorants".

Rubber conditioner

I don't like that shiney look either and have used several products that avoid it.

Lanolin is a natural substance (obtained from sheep, I think). It is goopy and kind of messy. But, I have used it on hard rubber that it turned soft again. Put a layer on and massage it in. I let it sit for a week or two. If it makes progress you might want to give it another treatment. I think I found the lanolin on eBay. When you go to remove it you will see just how stubborn it is. It takes some doing to get it off. That seems good to me indicating it won't easily come out of your rubber knee pads. The thing i like best about using lanolin is that it seems to bring back that distinctive rubber smell. To me that has to be a good thing.

Next is a product called TKO. I don't know who makes it. I got some from my brother and he uses it on his Shelby Mustang. It works pretty well but, seems to be a water based product. It seems to kind of disappear before too long.

Last is "Coconut Creme Protectant Conditioner" by Carnu-B. I really like this stuff. The coconut oil in it seems to soak in and bring back that black, black, rubber color. My wife uses it as a facial cleaner and skin conditioner and it is pretty impressive. She also cooks with coconut oil and it has a very low melting point. It seems that makes the volatile oils come back out so this seems to disappear after a while when it is used on rubber motorcycle parts. But, the other great thing about the coconut oil is that it is a really good solvent so it will really pull dirt and oxidized rubber out of whatever you put it on. When i used it on an original seat, it not only made the vinyl more pliable, it turned it really black and even brought out the bronze color of the "HONDA" logo on the back. Before using the Carnu-B, the logo barely showed up. The treatment made it pop pretty well again. It works well on all rubber, including your tires.

BTW, Carnu-B also makes a carnuba wax that has banana oil in it. That stuff is fantastic. I used it on an '89 Mustang with very faded paint. It was an experiment to see if it would help a little. I was absolutely amazed at how it brought back the shine and made the paint so it would show a reflection like when it was new. The best thing about the Carnu-B products is that they are very reasonably priced.

I hope the above is helpful to you and that your knee pads dazzle everyone.
