CA78 Questions

Post by Magilla » Sun Mar 13, 2016 4:52 pm

I just bought a CA78 and I need help with a few things.

A: I believe it is a 1964. Vin# CA78 10000201

B: The starter wire is missing. Can someone send me a picture of how the wire connects on both ends?

C: Is there a trick to removing the carb? It is stuck up inside the frame and seems like it will be a pain to remove.

D: Do these bikes have air cleaners? Mine does not and i don't see where it would ever fit if it had one.

Magilla, is it possible that I know you from the New England Riders forum?

Someone more knowledgeable than I will be along shortly to help, but I believe your Vin makes your Dream a '65 - '67. I would guess a '65.

The engine on my '64 is out, so I can't provide photos of the starter wiring, but look here in an unrelated thread for the second photo on the page of the wire at the starter end and routing out of the right side cover ( http://www.honda305.com/forums/oil-leak ... t8840.html ).

If I can find one of the routing to the solenoid I'll post it, but it's really a straight shot into the frame and it comes out of the hole just by the solenoid. Used replacements can be found on eBay or you can look for new at Ohio Cycle. Alternatively, go to the CMSNL website and look at the parts diagrams, get the Honda part number and do a Google search for it. The CMS website is very helpful and you also might be able to buy a new wire there. Long wait times though. http://www.cmsnl.com/Rhonda-ca77_model992/partslist/

There is an air cleaner for your bike and a rubber tube that connects it to the carb. The large air cleaner fits into the frame through the large opening behind the battery and is held in with a though frame bolt. The diagrams at CMS will explain a lot. New repros are available at David Silvers Spares and other places. See

Let me know if you're on the Cape sometime and we can meet up.

That's the same air cleaner as on my '67 Dream. I HATE that arrangement!!!!!!! Try getting that damned air hose on between the filter and the carb! Honda would have gone out of business if they had kept on with those stupid designs!
