Another Newbie! And a couple of questions . . .
Another Newbie! And a couple of questions . . .Like the other newbie who just posted, I have been lurking here as well. I also just acquired my 305 Dream. It is a 1967, black and in original, unrestored condition, and it runs. I have a couple of newbie questions:
1. I see two holes in the bottom of the front fender in all the pics I have looked at. My bike has them also. From looking at parts diagram, I understand a mudguard went there? However I never see them on the bikes, just the holes or some bolts. Was this an option or did these guards just all fall off after a month after leaving the showroom from a rock hitting them or something?. Just curious. 2. In the hundreds of write ups I have read on potential bikes to buy, there always seemed to be a comment about the baffles. What's up with the baffles? Rusted out? Damaged? Removed/lost? Good? Bad? What should I look for in mine? Lastly, I saw someone here from Kerrville, TX. I'm in Fredericksburg--small world. Thanks again and I look forward to enjoying this forum.
Welcome aboard. I'm no expert so these are just my theories. As far as the mudguards I don't know, but I suspect they were vulnerable and when damaged didn't always get replaced. The exhaust baffles were very easy to remove and many disappeared within hours of ownership never to be seen again. The mufflers were subject to rust on the baffle end, but I don't think the presence or absence of baffles was a factor.
And finally, The fellow in Kerrville, LOUD MOUSE, is one of our most knowlegable and helpful members. LM has been wrenching on these bikes since they were new and having him nearby is certainly a great asset. "If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy." Red Green
Re: Another Newbie! And a couple of questions . . .Welcome.
My first caution to you is "Do not ride off any curbs"! If you do you will learn why the guard is missing on the front fender. Riders liked to hear more noise so they removed the baffles. ...................lm
Thanks to both of you. Good info. Anything special or dos/don'ts when I go through this old bike? It has 6K miles on it, starts right up, so for now was just going to change out gas, flush carb, change oil, look at air filter, etc. Can't ride it yet though--original tires are 50 years old, although they do hold air! Crazy.
I will search this site for oil and tire recommendations. I'm sure you've already answered both a hundred times. Thanks again! http://www.classichondarestoration.com/ ... d_249.html
I put one on my CA78 after restoration. And yes a lot of people ( me included ) removed the baffles for a louder sound in the 60's.
Thanks! Amusing to me: Once on the website, click on MORE IMAGES and there is a great pic of it installed on the fender. Funny how it fits, looks like Honda had some spare parts laying around in a bin and just made it fit this fender by drilling those two holes.
When I was 14 I had a CB100. All my friends had them too and all they talked about was taking out baffles. I was scared to take mine out--stories about cops giving you a ticket . . . LOL How times have changed. So I guess the reason there is so much talk about baffles in sale write ups, is because everyone took them out and then were lost. Making them more sought after . . . Hi Texasgrape, Hope you get the same pleasure from your Dream as I do. Went for some gas today and felt 18 again riding it.
I fitted Overlander mufflers to mine as I wanted the original look.. They have inbuilt baffles but I had a guy make me up some false baffle ends to make it look more original.
