The "Wobbles"...

Post by SAM33 » Thu Jul 07, 2016 1:42 pm

So I decided to start a new specific thread as I seem to be past my first shakedown issues with this bike. I know defined subject topics make it easier for others with similar questions to search in the future, sure has helped me a lot already.

Still running since my condenser/points wire fix, just had it out for the first time in a week. I'm now fully planning on moving ahead on restoring it, although this will be a slow project over the next couple of years I suspect, especially as I still have my day job!

So probably take the tank off this winter and get that re-done inside, and all new wiring for sure eventually.

But now that I've been able to ride it some, I have some questions about the ride itself.
First, it has incredible compression, which I mostly feel is a good thing, right? But back off the throttle in first or second and it almost jerks. Find it very hard to decelerate smoothly as I downshift. Is this just me being a crappy rider? Or somewhat normal for these?

AND, once you get up to speed in second, and then in third, it gets a pretty good wobble.
Not enough to make me feel I'm losing control or anything, but certainly there.
Some of this I'm pretty sure is the rear wheel, up on the center stand you can see it spins just a bit off. Likely bearings I'm told, or the spoke wires need adjusting? Maybe suspension playing a part too (boy this rear end is bouncy!) Are these things I might tackle, or should I stay away from that and seek help? I do want to make sure it's a safe ride now that it runs pretty consistently.

But I also sort of feel that the engine or transmission is maybe for lack of a better word "hesitating" a bit at speed too. Somehow just not as smooth as it ought to be? Honestly not sure if I'm imagining this or not. I'm so used to riding a smooth little modern Vespa that maybe some of this is just part of the experience of these so to speak? How smooth of a rider should this be physically?

As always, input form folks here is highly valued!

Dreams actually handle quite well. I ride mine on the freeway regularly and never hesitate to blast through fairly high-speed turns WFO. (The term 'high-speed' being, or course, relative.)

As with all bikes, let the manual be your guide. Set everything up according to the manual and all will be well. If all is not well, something's not set up right. Easy peasy.

As to your 'wobble,' check steering head bearings, check all fasteners on wheels, forks, axles, engine, etc. Ribbed front tire will 'hunt' over rain grooves. Weaving slightly will eliminate this. You can also just ignore it, as I do.

As with all old bikes, many problems are due to operator malfunction....
Do what you've always done and you'll get what you've always had.

Thanks Nick!
I'll take your advice and start going over it.

For sure, especially when the operator is old too...
;-)
