Dream 305 Chain guard(s)Dream 305 Chain guard(s)Next dumb newbie question -
So I'm missing the chain guard on mine, and I've just bought a lower half off eBay for my 66, they seem harder to get than the uppers and one popped up in pretty good shape not too dear cost-wise. Next I'll get an upper of course when the price/condition is right. Are they even any different year-to-year for say a 64- 67, or are they interchangeable? In looking at the bike, it seems you may have to take off the right tail pipe to put it on, and it seems like the fit (on mine at least) will be tight? The upper half looks easy to put on. AND, do you need to put both on at once, or could you just have the upper one on for instance (my bike really throws oil off the chain up onto the rear shock and fender). I can see they bolt together at the rear. Thanks as always! SAM33 I think you will be able to get away with just the bottom half for a while.
You may have to watch for rubbing or snagging though - especially when rolling backwards. The top and bottom halves are only connected at the back. But this connection makes one support the other. When rolling backwards you run the risk of having a link in the chain catch the edge of the guard at the rear. Makes sense, thanks! I'll probably just wait until I get both halves to be safe (it's really the top I need to keep the oil spray down. I have a small leak in I think the sprocket drive seal, will need to address that eventually).
Do you know if these are the same through most of the model years? Will likely speed up me getting the top if I don't have to wait for a 66 specifically. chain guardDon't know of any difference in chain guards.
Part arrived, and a rough fit seems like it's the right one, BUT-
I can see some potential rubbing as i spin the wheel with it in place on the center stand. But perhaps with the washers in place they space it out enough, hopefully so? Any alignment tricks I should know, seems straightforward enough. The guard has some light surface rust, it doesn't appear bent in any way. While it may be tricky to get both bolts ("6 x 8 hex" my parts list says) in that hold it to the swingarm with the muffler on, it looks do-able? EDIT - Actually I got one (smaller diameter) bolt in just temp to get it aligned right, and I think I can now see that with the top on and bolted to the lower it will not rub, so that's good. Also, the parts diagram I have shows bolts and washers, but no nuts? Are the openings on the swingarm actually threaded? That would make it possible to get it on with the muffler in place I think.
