Front Sprocket Sizing

Post by bodie1204 » Wed Oct 19, 2016 4:01 pm

Hey guys, been lurking for a year or so now. I have a 1965 CA77 that I am getting going on. Here is a problem I have been having (I apologize ahead of time for the daftness of my questions, I am a learn as you go bike builder).

I have read here that the drive chain is 525x96 and considering my chain was very rusted I purchased on on ebay. Got it in fits the back sprocket like a glove but the spacing on the chain seems off for the front sprocket.

A couple questions, I am nervous to try and force this on the sprocket so is it possibly user error here? The rear fits so well so I thought there must be something wrong here.

Secondly, this isn't the original engine, but did all the 305's use that 525x96 spacing? If so it could be an engine of something different. I got a completely redone engine along with my purchase, I believe it was rebuilt by the guy who redoes 305's out of Texas.

Pics below, I appreciate the help just trying to get this girl back on the road.

525 chain and sprockets are what is stock for a CA77. It seems like your small drive sprocket is either a 530 from a CB77/CL77 or a 520 sprocket from a CL72. You'll need to get a 525 drive sprocket.

Are there any interchangeable ones that anyone knows of so I could get a new one or should I just search the bay for a used one?

No interchanges that I know of. It's a 16 tooth sprocket that came on the CA77, part number 23801-266-000. Ohio Cycle has NOS ones at $45. You could also call Sprocket Specialists and see if they have that application available.
