Wiring short somewhere? 305 dream 1967

Post by dreamneworleans » Wed Mar 01, 2017 10:42 pm

I have 67 305 dream. I had posted about a short that caused my headlight, taillight and speedometer to stop working.. Despite those issues the bike was running well until yesterday when something started to cause the 20amp fuse in the battery compartment to keep blowing. Seemingly when I slowed down.. ? I replaced the fuse 4 or 5 times and got it to run fine home. Then today it ran fine again when the same thing happened. Can anyone help me troubleshoot? about 2 years ago I put on an electronic ignition which has never given me problems.. (just mentioning that for reference as it required a bit of wiring changes.

Well, if my Dream ever did something like that I'd remove the headlight and very carefully inspect all the wiring in there, particularly those wires going to the headlight. Check the wires running to the taillight and confirm that they're not worn through anywhere along their length. Check the wires from the handlebar switch, etc.

Carefully inspect the loom where it passes through the frame on the way to the headlight, etc.

If none of that works, pull the entire loom out of the bike and carefully examine every single wire. Pulling the loom off isn't very hard, and it's a good opportunity to replace bad connectors, bad wires, etc.

Don't use junk hardware store connectors. Original-style Japanese-type connectors are available which are very good.

Somewhere in there you've probably got a wire shorting out to ground.
Do what you've always done and you'll get what you've always had.

First off your wiring harness was designed with a 15 amp fuse protection, not 20amp. You already realize you have a short somewhere, and I've read in your old posts you've dealt with wiring issues before. First place I would look is your batteries positive post. It could be shorting out if you don't have it set up right, i.e. no battery clamp or loose fitting clamp. Other than that you have to check your wiring and process eliminate.

Good Luck

You mention the fuse blows "when slowing down."
Possibly when applying rear or front brake????
If that's it, now you have a clue.

Wiring short somewhere? 305 dream 1967

Hi. So I removed a couple of wires that were no longer in use as result of installing Elec. ignition a couple of years ago. (note. This short is a new problem). I looked at everything in the headlight compartment and the battery compartment. I did have an extra unused wire to the battery that I removed. As for the switch on the left. It never worked properly and once when I flipped while riding, it did blow that fuse. Sooo.. perhaps the problem is there for lights and fuse. but when I pull it apart I cannot tell that anything is wrong. But it doesn't work. I guess it is for bright headlight? Also, the guy I bought it from is a reputable honda restorer near me and it came with the 20amp fuse and not 15. Is this a possible issue? It has never been a problem before. What do you think? What about the solenoid next to the battery. Blue and white wire going in.. from tail light, yes? Thanks for your time and advice. J
