I should know about this but I apparently don't. I had the right hand cover off to repair the starter clutch and reassembled the cover just as it came off -- I thought. Now the kick starter lever is in the vertical position but will not move down as if to start - it will move down towards the front. Thought I would ask before taking the side cover off AGAIN - it is way down on my list of things I want to do.
Thanks - Don

I had the cover off to install the rebuilt starter clutch. I actually left the clutch cable and the guts of the cover alone - hung it to one side with a bungee. Once I had the starter clutch reinstalled I did bump the motor several times with the starter button to make sure the clutch would work.
My guess is when the motor was turned over it moved the kick starter splined shaft. So when reassembling it was in the wrong position. I was looking for an easy solution because I dread removing the cover "one more time". However I was not aware that were "marks" to line up the spline shaft and the lever. Have done this numerous times and never had a problem.
