Beauty Is Only Skin Deep

Post by Seadog » Sat Jun 09, 2018 4:50 pm

I recently picked up a few motors for parts. One of them was a Dream engine that had been sitting outside in the dirt for quite some time. It did have a good kick start cover and a very nice looking carburetor, but I really didn't need it. However, it was part of the deal. I reasoned that I could strip it for some of the parts I might be able to use and pass the rest on.

On a whim, I started playing with the Dream's carb today. It's really quite nice.

Then I opened it up....

I don't think I've ever seen a carburetor so bad. Anyway, I started cleaning. The float fell apart, but I managed to get the pin out. I also got out the main jet/holder and the float valve without damage to the carb. The slow jet is still inside, but I stopped short of damaging the slot. At about this time, I decided to stop. I just don't need this carb and I could be spending time on fixing things that I do need.

Here's how it stands now:

With a bit more work, I'm sure this carb could live again.

Here's my offer: If you think you can take on the challenge to finish the work I started OR if you need some parts from this carb, I'll mail it to you, free, in the CONUS. The choke mechanism is complete and works fine, the lever just needs some love, the intake screen is good, the brass fuel nipple is fine and the top cap and ring are salvageable. I'll include the carb insulator. In return, if you do resurrect it, I'd like to see a photo of the finished product. Even better, I'd like to see a video of it on a running Dream.

Who's up for it?

Please, don't just be a parts collector. Let someone that needs it have a chance.

Early round bowl carb?

That's about as bad as I've seen!

I don't need it, but am up for the challenge if no one else does?

A good challenge for the adventurous!

I found 4 CB77 round bowl carbs at an auto-jumble last year and they looked horrible and pitted on the outside.

When I stripped them, they were clean and perfect inside. It looked like they had been restored at sometime and then thrown out in the rain for a few years.

I just need to think about how to 'restore' a good finish to the bodies....

Win a few, lose a few, G. The 2 carbs on the partial ‘66 CB77 engine I just bought don’t look so great on the outside (yet), but I was very pleasantly surprised when I opened them up.

HaHa!

Yes - my 'lose a few' is the SL175 I got last year where the engine with only 4k miles is ruiined with rust. Not everywhere, just the important parts......

A final update to this thread:

Thanks to Brewsky for offering to take up the challenge, but as he really does not need this carb, I've opted to pass it on to another form member who does. Olde-goat has contacted me via PM and I'll be sending it on to him to take up the refurbishment battle. Good luck with the task, Olde-goat! Let us know how it turns out!
