Head Rods

Post by Dr. Frankenstein » Wed Mar 20, 2019 5:34 pm

Okay, so I'm moving on and finally got the pistons back in their cylinders, and the head on, but now I need to know which one of these is the oil passage rod. I *Believe it's one of the two skinnier rods as seen on the right, and those go into the oil passages through the head on the front corners;

But note the two shorter rods on the left:

I HAD these in a piece of cardboard in the way I took them out, but for some reason I just pulled them all out to clean up the threads, and then I looked at them and said like Tim Allen, 'Oh no..' So here I am...

Do the four long ones in the middle go into the middle of the head, with the two skinny rods on the right into the oil passages, and the two on the Left go into the rear corners…? Or...?

Looking at the parts diagram, the Nasty thought I have is that I have the cam chain on, BUT...#3 on page 14 of the parts diagram of the head bolts shows a Knock Pin...and I put TWO knock pins into the cylinder head oil passages, while the HEAD shows ONE, on Page 4...I assumed it took the two pins on either side of the cylinder head for the oil passages between the heads, and I have a nagging feeling I made a mistake - did I? Nothing is locked down yet, but it would be a PITA to have to take the cam chain back off, and lift the head Just enough to get that damn pin out.

I don't Recall taking out a knock pin from the head bolts after I took off the top cover, but that's just it: I don't remember.

did you get the o-rings installed on the oil passage knock pins? if not you are taking it all apart anyway.
Good luck

Yeah, I got those in - I just want to make sure I get these head bolts in the right way.

But that's another question: how MANY knock pins are there Total, and where do they go...? The diagram only shows One on each "level", if you will...(case to cylinder head, and cylinder head to upper head).

I have Two in between the cylinder head and the engine case; then I have another two (with their O-rings) in between the cylinder head and the upper head. Are they in the correct spots, do you know...?

And more importantly, which head bolt hole gets what? I suppose I'll figure it out, but it would be nice to have that info confirmed.

Hi Doc,
Not sure if my photos solves your problem but the skinny studs go to the front of the case and the longer ones go to the inner four position. You should be able to see where the knock pins go, there are two in the case and two in the head, I'm assuming what you call knock pins we Brits call ferrells, the tubes that the o-rings go round.

Hi Geoff;

Thanks, its good to know I DO have the knock pins/ferrells where they should be...

Right, so the two skinny ones go to the outside front corners, but then of the six other ones, the four longer of the six go to the inside four - two in the front, between the skinny ones, and the other two in the rear/center, and then the two Shorter of those six go to the outside Rear..?

(Front)
Skinny Long Long Skinny
Shorter Long Long Shorter
(Rear)

Like that? And when I get them all tightened up, they should be the same height above the head, yes..?

And Wow - where'd you find the original 305 pistons...? Are those new/OEM?

The 'check' for having them in the right location is that all will protrude the same amount throgh the cam cover. If they ar enot equal then you have some in the wrong location........
