Newbie update & need help - No Spark

Post by kenkah » Wed Jun 29, 2011 8:37 pm

A little bit of an update.

I check the carb - Bowl was clean looked brand new.

Rebuilt the petcock with kit from retro bikes.

Waiting on Air filter and tube to come in.

Put in New NGK D8HA plugs and new boots.

I Tried to start the bike and found that I have no spark whatsoever. I followed the plugs back to a white cylinder shaped item. I found that the terminals on both ends felt warm to the touch after trying to start the bike several times. I assume this is similar to a distributor on a car. Are these known to fail and is there a way to test them?

That device you mention is the ignition coil. Have you checked the points? They shpuld be gapped correctly and clean. It sounds like you are getting power to the coil if it feels warm.

Hi. Welcome to the Dream. ;) Did you trim your spark plug wires back about 1/4 inch? After that, make sure your timing is correct. You can check Paperslammer's post on that.

Key in the correct position?
Battery with a decent charge?
Plugs out of the plug holes and grounded with good contact?
Condenser replaced and/or known good and connected?
Wiring harness plugged in well?
Kill switch (little button on the left side hand controls on depressed? (just kidding on this one!)

It will be the simple things that are missed in my opinion :)

No Spark

I'm gonna try to trim back the plugs today and see what happens. I did find that in another thread after I had previously posted.

As for the condenser, how to go about checking that?

Also, when you say check the points are you referring to the plugs themselves?

The points (contact breaker points) are under the small cover on the right hand side of the cylinder head. By flicking the points open (ignition on) you should see a spark at a (grounded) spark plug.

Turns out that There were no points under the cover. I did find what looks to be another part but I have to see if it matches up
