How a few questions about my new purchase.....

Post by Kigsby » Thu Oct 27, 2011 10:27 am

I love the old bike and I'm getting ready to start fixing it up. I'm searching through the posts to get as much info as I can on cleaning products, etc. I was giving the bike the once over last night while I was cleaning it (still waiting for my manuals to arrive before I can do any fixing) and had a few questions - When I do an oil change, do I just clean out the filter that's in there and reuse it? I don't need to buy a new filter for each change? I don't know about drum brakes, I have disc on my other bike - Is there no brake reserviour for this bike? And last question (for now anyway) is there a tool kit for this bike? If so, where might it be hidden? It's a 1962 Dream 305. Thanks for your help!

Hey good find on your CA!
Oil filter is really a centifuge. Oil is pumped through it and as it spins, contaminates and sludge etc is flung out to the side of it. So clean it and reuse it. There is an o-ring in there too, reuse it if it looks to be in good shape. Make sure it goes back in correctly. Brakes are purly mechanical. Only requires adjustment and lube. I usually pull the brake assy. out every year or two depending on how much I ride just to look it over and adjust and lube if necessary. As far as a tool kit goes, I think each bike had one when it left the factory but sadly most were lost or utilised elsewhere. If it is there it's in the side cover ontop of the battery.

Thank you Jethro! That's kind of nice....not having to buy oil filters! This bike is SO different than my Yamaha. I guess being 50 years older, you would hope there were some differences! I wanted to find out about the brakes before I decide what to do. I would like to just get new cables for the clutch and brake rather than trying to clean them out. They're pretty gunked up. But I just couldn't find the brake fluid! I couldn't find any cables that were black. All the different sites I found they were gray. Anyone know where I can find black cables??

I found black cables a few years ago, but I think most of them are gray. You could always tape off the ends and use a rattle can to paint them if you really want black ones. Good luck with your bike.

Not having a filter has it's drawbacks. Make sure to change the oil often. I do every 1000 miles or once a year, whichever comes first.
