Camshaft Installation tips??

Post by Dr. Frankenstein » Tue Nov 15, 2011 10:01 am

Okay, you'll probably laugh at this, but...

This past summer I disassembled the camshaft of my 1964 CA77E to clean and lube everything, then ran out of money, so it sat up until this past weekend...I got some new parts, and am ready to reassemble everything and see if it'll run, but now (you guessed it! ) I can't remember the sequence the camshaft and center wheel get reassembled...I seem to recall there was a trick to it, (the order in which they came out), but I don't remember it, and that center wheel does not want to fit in there when you try to replace them in sequence...

I have 7 parts: the left cam lobes and two bearings; the center sprocket; and the right cam lobes and 2 bearings. I'm sure I can figure it out, but I thought I would solicit an opinon, and hopefully a digram or two...Any advice would be great!

Thanks!
(And FYI, the makeshift 'C-clamp-and-drilled-out-piece-of-tubing' to replace the valve keepers works great!)

John

Doc,
Maybe at www.cmsnl.com You'll find exploded views of most engine sections. Just maybe it'll help jog yer memory.

+1 on using the parts book Mike.
Last year WrenchRust provided a link to a high res download of the CL77 parts book (thanks again WrenchRust, I've used it quite a bit).
Do an Author search for "WrenchRust" using the Search link in the Forum header above and you'll see it.

http://rivetrestorations.com/Service.html has a CB77 service manual included in their collection of manuals, the CL and CB 77 engines are basically the same with the obvious ChickenHawk differences.
