Side cover felt?

Post by KellieLyyne » Tue Dec 27, 2011 12:33 am

Has anyone used some sort of felt/gasket/rubber piping between their side covers, and the frame so the paint doesn't get marred? If so, what did you use? Im looking for something to keep them snug tight, and not rub the paint off covers and frame. Any ideas?

There are supposed to be rubber bumpers in the small tabs with holes in them on the backside of the covers (mine are long gone). Don't know if the replacements are available or not, but substitutes shouldn't be too hard to come up with.

There is a slot along the top of the backside that looks like a receptacle
for some felt or rubber, but nothing is shown on my parts diagram. I cut a thin piece of innertube and stuffed in that slot for insulation.

I have tried various methods for insulating vibration between the bottom tabs that fit in the long slots without much success.

I've been considering dipping the bottom tabs in liquid rubber (like the stuff they coat insulated tool handles with).

Oh wow that stuff looks like a good idea! I bought some 3m clear film used to protect the paint that we used in other areas where we had to but metal pieces together, but I think that rubber coating is a better idea for that bottom tab of the battery box. Thanks for sharing!

No problem.
I would even consider dipping the lever ends in the stuff since the replacement rubber covers seem so hard to install (there is another thread on this somewhere)

I did the same as Brewsky, by using the rubber inner-tube piece. It is a little difficult to keep it in so I kinda folded it over and crimped it, but before I did that, I used a little hot glue to hold it. I also tried a piece I cut out of a windshield washer blade but that stuff is tough and it was too hard to work with. As far as the tabs, my tabs had little holes in them and I picked up some little plastic push pins in black from lowes (in the fasteners section). Together they work quite well. Steve

Good information, thanks you guys. We are putting on the final touches to the bike. I actually rode it around the block a few times late last night :) , it has interesting sounds (like an old house that makes little sounds but you don't really know where they are coming from lol).

We noticed a very small oil drip/leak coming from the front side gasket between the motor and heads. We know that the p/o had a small fire, we are hoping it didn't warp the heads, but we have taken the heads off and replaced the gasket and torqued it down good and tight, and yet we still have a slight leak. Eventually we will pull the motor out and have someone look at it to see if it is warped. If so we will have it machined. Until then, I just want to ride it for a bit.

We ended up using rubber tubing, and sliced it to fit in the crevice of the cover to make a nice seal. On the battery side cover we ended using this on the bottom flange that slides into the battery box. It made a nice tight seal and without it, I would have scratched the crud out of it putting it on and off.
