Leaking gas from gas cap

Post by jimpapa » Sat May 12, 2012 2:50 pm

After a short ride I found gas had leaked out from gas cap.
I checked and the gasket was cut so I ordered a new one.
Installed an after letting bike run for 15 minutes I can here air pressure leaking out of the cap, as I loosed it some gas came out and all over freshly painted tank.
Tank is only 1/4 full.
It's pressure building in the tank and forcing gas and air out the top.
Is this a problem with the cap or somewhere else in the fuel system?
Thanks

Sounds to me like you need a new cap. The cap should be vented. See the hole in the bottom in the middle? You should also see two very small holes on the sides.

Blow into the hole and air should come out the sides where the spring latch sticks out. Plug these off with your fingers and the air should blow out the small holes.

If not, your cap is plugged.

Leaky gas cap

Hello,

You might want to drill another tiny hole opposite the one tiny hole that it has. I used to have gas cap problems (no air getting in, leaky gas). Loud Mouse told me to drill a tiny hole opposite the other one, and I get no more vacuum problems, and less leaking. But I think you will always have some leaks with a full tank - its the design of the tank.

All the best!
