Grandfather gave me his bike he parked in the barn back in 1978. Got it running and doing the little stuff to get it on the road. Looking forward to putting some miles on it.

Congrats on getting your Grampa's bike. That history will make riding it that much more enjoyable.

Thanks. I have spent a lot of time on eBay getting the various parts I needed. Does anyone know of a way to clean the inside of a tank without having to use a liner?

Tan and red? It just looked to me like the bike was originally red. Seat looks great either way.

Now I have not tried this on a tank yet but I've been wanting to. I hate doing a liner on a tank. Here is what I'm going to try next time.

I've used "Wood Bleach" on rusted parts. It works great. Wood Bleach is a solid powder (sort of like Tide after it gets wet and drys, if you aren't familiar with it).

You dissolve some in water and place the rusted part in it to set. It does a great job in dissolving the rust. There is a bunch of information and pictures on the net showing how well it works.

Seat

Post by sutto1dm » Wed Aug 15, 2012 3:40 pm

Thanks. The original seat was black that had been painted red by the owner before my grandfather purchased the bike. It's the original paint on the bike (black). I thought the tan would look good with black but we'll see. I have to get the bike painted yet but the original seat would flake paint on your clothes so I had it re-upholstered this week.

I'll try that on my tank. I have two tanks. The one I have on it now I bought online and came off a 1965. The original tank just has a few rust spots on the inside I need to clean out before I use it as a spare. I'll check Lowes tonight and see if they have some wood bleach. I've heard about rusteco as well and might try it if the wood bleach doesn't work.

Black and tan will look great. Personally I really like a seat a different color than the bike.
