Yes, needs a rectifier, regulator not required on CB CLs .

Davo, I don't know what a computer-grade capacitor is. Could you maybe find something on ebay as an example of what is needed? Would one capacitor be sufficient for a 2-coil system? Thanks!

You are using DC coils then the capacitor is simply replacing the battery, so it is one per bike.

I'll let Davo respond to the capacitance issue.

Teazer,
Thanks for the capacitor help. Yes, the photo is a CR72, it uses a small 2-coil alternator, no rectifier or battery, and the original coils are about 0.9 ohm. They are referred to as the energy transfer type. --Randall

Randall, sorry just got caught up on this post! Here's an example from ebay, same mfd rating I am using, but you want to have a higher than 12volt rating, mine is rated at 20 volts.

davo,
Thanks for the capacitor link. I just bought a Honda C100 coil, it is a 6 volt AC coil that presumably would not need a capacitor or rectifier. It is 3.5 ohm, however, compared to the 0.9 ohm of the original energy transfer coil. I'll give it a try to see if it will generate a spark by simply turning the engine over. --Randall

Yes, I remember as a young guy running my SL100 straight off of the ac generator, just one wire to the coil, after stripping every light and wire off of the bike!
