I used a stiff non corregated cardboard about 1 mm thick. Ideally use proper gasket material but I've never had a problem making gaskets from cornflake packets or similar.

I've got some pretty robust gasket material, it's a rubber/cork mix, but I also have some regular gasket paper, about 1mm thick. I'll try that and see what happens. Thanks!

(You don't have a big O-ring going around the disc, do you..?)

No, tried an o ring with the original tap, the fuel made it swell then leaked. Probably the wrong type of o-ring material.

Cardboard gaskets.

Post by DJM » Fri Apr 06, 2018 3:51 pm

My dad told me over fifty years ago about making gaskets out of brown paper or cardboard boxes, it's good to hear that these cheap fixes are still around. He also said about using cardboard for clutch friction plates but I wouldn't recommend that!

I probably got it from my Dad also.

DJM

Did he tell you about putting neat holes in the gaskets using a lit cigarette?

Not an option for me but my Dad was always equipped.....

Gaskets,

Graham,

Not heard that one but I can see how it would work for our dads, not for me either though!

I think it goes in the filing system along with stuffing the tyres with grass in the event of a puncture, something else I wouldn't recommend but apparently something my dad had done, I suppose needs must, a long while before Green Flag or RAC Recovery.
