Holy Hell, can we clean off the spammers?

Do we need more: Boards? Topics? Motorcycles? Different organization? Layout? Suggestions on how to improve the h305 Forum.

Holy Hell, can we clean off the spammers?

Post by Sol_Stew » Sun Nov 10, 2019 9:19 pm

Just joined. Got a CA78 as a gift and looking for restoration resources.
I used to moderate a del Sol forum that ran this same software. We were constantly challenged by spam, but managed to stay ahead of it.
I hope this forum can be recovered. Seems like a nice place.
Let me know if I can help.

Hi and welcome to what is a mess, I wish somebody could sort out the spammers as this is a good forum with a vast amount of knowledge but it is being ruined by them.
Most of the people with the knowledge are getting on in years, ( that's where the knowledge comes from) but I and there are probably a lot more who don't understand as much about computers as they do cb72's and cb77's.
Bit of a rant there but once again welcome.
Al.

Spammers

Post by DJM » Mon Nov 11, 2019 6:39 am

It's fairly straightforward, the site has been going for close to twenty years and the software is way out of date and thus no protection against the spammers.

The site is hosted by hyperreal.org

Reasonably, they will only allow changes / updates if instructed by the site's owner (Michael Stoic) or someone else with administrator privileges.

Michael has either disappeared or lost all interest in the site, (or perhaps both) and has never granted administrator privileges to anyone else so that's why we are where we are.

The site is still OK apart from the scammers; on the horizon though I believe the agreement with the hosts (hyperreal.org) has a limited lifespan.

When this comes to an end the site may disappear altogether, which would be a tragedy, or the opportunity may allow someone else to take over the site's admin.

This was all discussed on here about a year ago, I don't remember the outcome but recall that someone one the list had actually been in touch with hyperreal.org about the site's problems and not got very far, in fact nowhere.

Anyone care to clarify the above comments.

This is my first post. I joined this AM. I have been reading (mining) for about six months. Bought a '65 ca77 this spring, and needed knowledge. This place is a very important resource for these bikes, and must be saved ! Does no one know the owner ? Many important photos are gone already.

This is the answer I got from Hyperreal:

honda305.com is not hosted by Hyperreal.

The only motorcycle thing we've got here is the vjmc mailing list.

I have no idea how to contact Michael Stoic, either. Sorry!

-Mike

OK, this is progress...I think.

Awesome! Thanks guys. Nice to connect with the core group!

Hopefully we can sort this out easily.
Fingers crossed!

I'll post something up for my new project.
