Across Canada and back through the USAAcross Canada and back through the USASo as some of you may know, I am on the last leg of my build... She is going to take me on a 3-4 week journey across Canada from Nova Scotia to British Columbia then south from B.C. to California then over to NYC and back to Toronto, Canada.
I would love to begin organizing doing a short/long leg of my trip with some of you guys... Anyone who is good for a leg of the journey, let me know! Probably happening next summer/fall. -Sascha
And of course that's assuming that nothing goes wrong, you have beautiful dry weather every day, and you don't plan on doing anything else on the trip other than ride. Plus, things will surely be a lot slower in the Rockies on a small bike (and up around Lake Superior). Taking smaller roads will be slower, and sometimes you have no choice but to take the smaller roads (like on certain spots of the Trans-Canada). Can't say too much about riding a bike in or near NYC, but being that I was there yesterday, the traffic is certainly fun (makes the 401 look like amateur hour)! Sounds more like a 6 week trip to me (and about 8-10 oil changes?), but I could be wrong (this is of course assuming you're riding a SuperHawk).
Have you done long trips on a bike before? Done a long trip on a bike this size before? And are you riding out to Nova Scotia first from T.O, then turning around and starting your trip from there? If so, that would add another 1500 miles to the journey, no? I just searched the Forum to find your bike -- is it the Dream you're planning on using? With those bars? And that seat? 7500+ miles? Hmmm..... Really nice build, by the way! Sorry, don't want this to sound like I (and judging by the other responses, a few others) am raining on your parade, and I'm all for encouraging people to ride the heck out of their classic Hondas (I've put about 20,000 miles on mine in 6 years), but if this were to be your first ride of this kind (and on a bike like this!), maybe something a bit closer to home might be better to start off with....like maybe Manitoulin Island? Or, um, Orangeville? But seriously, a shorter ride will give you a good idea about the bike, how comfortable (or not!) it is over the long haul (even 100 miles), how fast (or slow!) it is - particularly when it's loaded down with a tank bag, back seat bag, saddle bags etc, and whether the whole concept of an extended trip would work on this bike...and particularly the way you have your specific bike currently set up. Just a few things to consider, and I'll be interested to read your thoughts on the matter.... I received similar words from vince a year and a half ago,
took his advice and took a bigger bike on the trip instead... best decision I ever made. That being said, I fully intend on covering some serious ground on my superhawk (after it's re-re-build), but I now have a much better idea of how to plan for it etc... I did a 4500 mile trip on my vulcan 800 with my gf of the time on the back. we covered the entire pacific northwest in the US (was denied entry to canada on the account that they were SURE i was part of hells angels, but after 4 hours of harassment and damaging our bikes looking for narcotics, they were kind enough to let us return to our home country late in the cold cold night with a long ride to seattle). we made up for that by zig zagging every logging road we could find in WA and OR. had a wonderful time... but a hard time. And there were mechanical errors as well. You'll definitely want a few days to stay in some neat spots. I'd say wait till June/July, (rain and snow ya know?) then tackle one region and explore it thoroughly. Really become a master of the Atlantic North East. '65 CB77
