ok, i am working on my 65 cb77 superhawk. all the tins are out to paint being done in a grayish tone. now i have been polishing all the aluminum bits that i can burning my fingers through kevlar gloves at the buffing wheel. i had taken off both case covers and began an upclose inspection of the metal as i sanded. at first i didnt think that the time spent trying to smooth out 43 years of nicks and scratches in the aluminum was worth it. then i realized that regardless i had to smooth it either way if was to paint them. so after burning my fingers, i sat in a chair with an orbital sander to knock off the paint, a die grinder and a pile of sand paper.
i got one of them covers done tonight.
but here is the issue. as i sat there doing all this, i contemplated:
1 polish the covers, polish the endges of the cooling fins call it done.
2 polish the covers, paint the motor matte black then polish the cooling fins.
3 paint the covers to match, polish the cooling fins
4 paint the covers to match, paint the motor matte black, polish the cooling fins.
and that is where i am stuck.
either way i still need to drop the motor and paint the frame.
opinions needed

It is YOUR Super Hawk. You didn't say whether you plan to make it a restoration, cafe racer, chopper/bobber, or what. For me, none of your options would be correct. I would media blast all of the exposed surfaces down to bare aluminum. That means the engine has to come out and apart. The cooling fins should be raw aluminum. Not polished. Not painted. Still, it is your bike. Make it the way you want it.
