Super Hawk Engine Cover Color

Post by Seadog » Tue Nov 10, 2015 10:11 am

My Super Hawk came with a chromed engine cover. I assume that chrome was not standard and that a previous owner wanted a little bling. The horn cover is chrome as well. The engine cover is not really in terrible shape, but the chrome is starting to peel and I have no facility nearby that can remove it. I decided to just buy another and paint it.

My question is what color? I always thought the standard was silver, like the engine side covers, but where my replacement wasn't rusty, it looks as if it was painted black - perhaps over silver. See pics below.

Can anyone tell me how these came standard from Honda?

Top surface; all rust. It's in the de-rusting tank now.

I'm sure that others will correct me if I'm wrong but all of the ones I've seen in Honda packaging have been silver.

Thank you, G. I think the top should be silver as well, but I hope others will chime in to confirm our opinion. I just took the cover out of the de-rusting tank to wire brush it a bit. The underside paint has peeled off and it was definitely black. I wonder if that side was originally black, like the standard horn cover - silver outside, black inside. It's not a big deal as I'm not a diehard purist, but it's easy enough to paint it either way.

Thank you, LM. I've finished de-rusting and will be priming and painting it all silver tomorrow. The top came out more pitted than I'd hoped, but the back is fine.

VHT High Temperature Engine Enamel SP127 Universal Aluminum is a good match in my opinion. I use it on all of the painted parts of the engine (clutch, kicker, valley, and starter covers, as well as the starter). I like it because you can bake it on for 20 minutes and then it has excellent fuel resistance. Instructions on the can. I used the kitchen oven and it doesn't leave any odor. I did not ask for permission to do that beforehand...
