AC power to ignition

Post by rustywrench » Mon Jan 07, 2013 2:10 pm

After a long session of just lurking in the shadows, I recently purchased a cl77 and misc parts so I'm back in the saddle again. The bike I got is wired from a single wire from the alternator directly to the primary side of the coil. I'm told it was done that way by a flat track racer to eliminate the need for the battery. switch and wire harness.
Question: Is this really done out there and is it reliable? If so, I may consider it as a dirt/trail bike just to thrash around in the woods with. Rusty

Well, it should be able to work as some two strokes and other simple 4 strokes use that type ignition without batteries.

See here for previous question:

I would guess some of the flat track guys would know about specific application to 305's.

AC to the ignition

Post by rustywrench » Fri Jan 11, 2013 11:40 am

Thanks Brew,
I've also read a thread here about using a different condenser or a special do-dad for a battery free system. In this case, they wired from one leg of the alternator to the stock coil, condenser, and points. They said the flattrackers in the area did it that way.
I would think that if it did work at all it would run on one side of the AC wave basicly creating a crude direct curent.
I can't see that working at all so as they say, There ain't no free lunch. A battery doesn' t cost that much and I have the parts to do it the way Honda designed it . Not perfect but easier than re-inventing the wheel.
I had hoped to get a flat tracker to shed some light on this. Rusty

It should have had two wires going up to the coil(s), unless it has a 360° (Dream)crankshaft and a double ended ignition coil. Check and see if it has one set or two sets of ignition points. I had a CL77 set up like that years ago, it used a/c ignition coils(Honda 50 parts) and a pair of big tin can Mallory condensers. It needs the spark advance locked at full advance to work. If you can find the parts, it will start and run better with the stock setup.

ignition

Mike,
I do think I'll just set it up the way it's supposed to be. lots of stuff sitting not used so I might as well get some use out of it. I won't know about the advance until I tear it down for fresh rings etc. Thanks for the info though, Rusty
