What's the (practical) redline? I'm guessing 9000? That gives you about a 90mph top speed. A Ton would be nice. I'm thinking 14 would be better. We'll see. I'll have both to try. Right now, I have to pop off 2 links from my chain. I'm at the limit of the adjusters.

My first CB77 had 16/30, I seem to recall. The motor had been "breathed on" by the PO -- mainly gas-flowing and race valve springs. It revved to 12K and pulled 40mph in 1st, 80 in 2nd, 100 in 3rd and 95 in top; not enough power to overcome the long-leggedness of 4th gear!

That bike had a 520 final drive setup. I broke the chain on my way to my GCE 'physics' O-level exam and had to re-sit!

I've reached 10K, but the power's gone by then. I stopped at 80MPH and it was still climbing. Fast enough for me. I'd rather have faster out of the hole anyways. If you have a fresh engine, wait a bit the power will come in a bit. Mine did.

Steve, chain technology and strength has been much improved . A 520 is plenty strong for the 305s, and reduces unsprung rotational weight for a bit of performance gain.

Thanks Davo, I remember your post about that but I'd already bought the O-ring chain!

No worries Steve! That O-ring chain will last a good long time, and should arrely require adjustment.
